CALGreen documentation, the part everyone forgets
Green Building Standards Code documentation for residential and nonresidential projects — mandatory measures, tier compliance, and the waste management plans plan check will ask for.
Part 6 and Part 11 are not the same thing
Both sit inside Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations, which is where the confusion starts. Part 6 is the Building Energy Efficiency Standards — the energy report. Part 11 is CALGreen, the Green Building Standards Code, and it covers a completely different set of concerns.
Plenty of permit packages arrive with a perfect CF1R and no CALGreen documentation at all, and get rejected for it.
What CALGreen covers
- Water efficiency — fixture flow rates and irrigation provisions
- Construction waste management — diversion plans and documentation
- Material emissions — adhesives, sealants, paints, flooring and composite wood
- Site development — stormwater and surface water management
- Building maintenance — operation and maintenance manual requirements
- EV charging — readiness and installed-space requirements
Mandatory measures and tiers
The mandatory measures apply to essentially all covered new construction. Beyond that, CALGreen defines voluntary Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels — and a growing number of jurisdictions have made one of them mandatory locally. Whether a tier applies to you is a question about your jurisdiction, not about the state code, and it is one we check at intake.
